About the Department

Exploring Plant Life, Sustaining Our Future.

The Department of Botany was established in the year 2016. It was an offshoot of Department of Biological Sciences; established in 2002 where B.Sc. Botany was run as one of its program. The Department trains students admitted for Awards of B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Botany and M.Sc. in plant Pathology and also provides services to students in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and those majoring in Biology Education in the Department of Science Education.  Our philosophy is to provide students with good discipline, knowledge and sound understanding of the concepts and methodologies of Botany in key areas that meet the needs of society. Our vision is, as contained in the motto of the Adamawa State University, which is “Education for Development”, to provide education that will bring about development.  Our mission is to train students admitted into the through biological approach to understanding and solving problems towards making our environment a better and healthier place to live in, and to produce skilled graduates that will be self-reliant, and provide services in other areas rather than depending on government for employment.

The Department is dedicated to advancing knowledge in plant biology, ecology, conservation and any other areas of plants which are essential for addressing global challenges that include biodiversity loss, food security and climate change. Therefore, through research, education and community engagement, the department strives to inspire curiosity and appreciation for plants as they play an important role in sustaining life and generally the ecosystems.

The department focuses on offering Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) degree program in Botany by ensuring that its graduates have good knowledge on plant biology, ecology, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, cytogenetic, plant breeding, plant pathology, ethnobotany and mycology; thus preparing them to solve botany related problems and decide on what area of botany to take as area of specialty at post-graduate level. The department, therefore, conduct researches on plant genetics and breeding, conservation biology, ethnobotany, agro-ecology, nutrition botany, ecology, plant pathology, mycology and plant taxonomy.
